Higgidy’s Christmas of Comforts

As our friend Dr.Seuss once said, ‘Maybe Christmas,’ he thought, ‘doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas … perhaps … means a little bit more!’ We believe this year it’s all about coming together and feeling that sense of presence over presents. No matter what’s happening or what’s in store in the future, people across the UK are determined to make the most of those precious moments — especially around the holidays. And that’s where Higgidy comes in.

Bring everyone together, crack open a bottle of mulled wine, chuck Chris Rea on and drive home to the comfort of Higgidy this Christmas. We’re that warmth on a Winters eve, the reliable comfort food in the fridge and that cosy feeling of family.

As much as we’d love for Higgidy to be your go-to Christmas comfort, we know that everyone has their different traditions – be that favourite festive foods, family games or walks in the countryside, films on the sofa or songs you can dance to. Some of our favourite Christmas traditions have been passed down through generations, some are introduced accidently, and others are carefully planned, but they all contribute to the comforting wintertime ambience.

This year, we asked our most loyal Higgidy fans what makes Christmas time especially memorable and which ‘Christmas Comforts’ you all enjoy the most. We thought we’d share a couple of our favourites with you to help you get into the spirit of the season. Who knows, perhaps some of these may become a yearly tradition for you in the future too?

Enjoy these wholesome winter write-ins…

When we wake up, we like to put on Christmas music and spend some time together before going downstairs to start putting the Christmas dinner together. Usually, we like to pray and light a candle right before we eat.”

“Eating a plate of hot Chipolata sausages and drinking sherry on Christmas eve.”  – We might have to adopt this one!

“Watching The Grinch over and over! Decorating the tree together, playing board games, leaving out mince pies for Father Christmas, and carrots for reindeer, ahh great times!”

“On Christmas Eve, we always do a lot of baking and prep the vegetables for the Christmas dinner. After that is finished, the family gathers to watch Christmas movies. We continue to this day, after three generations, the tradition of giving small Boxing Day presents to close relatives as a way to prolong the magic.”

“We’re Polish so we follow a lot of the classic Polish traditions- including having Christmas Eve as the big day, refraining from meat, tasting at least 12 different dishes, placing hay under the tablecloth and having an extra plate for a stranger, etc.”

“Unwrapping our stockings at 9am on Christmas day on my brother’s floor. Even though we’re now in our late 20s and 2 of them are married….” – Old habits die hard.

These wonderful Christmas customs could fill about 100 pages, making for a delightful read and a warm feeling inside.

The Higgidy team were also asked whether they had any special memories, and many interesting suggestions were made, such as watching The Godfather on Christmas day! Unconventional but not uncool. We also received a lot of tree-decorating and food related comments – big shout to pigs in blankets and roasties which proved the most popular.

No matter how boring you may think your traditions may be, they still hold importance. Family traditions bond us closer together; they create memories that will last a lifetime; they give us something to look forward to and they create a sense of togetherness, and we all need that right now. This Christmas join Higgidy in our Christmas of Comforts.

Thank you to everyone who sent in their Christmas comforts and made us smile. We’d love to hear what everyone is up to and what your own traditions are too so please keep in touch via our social media channels or thekitchen@higgidy.co.uk

Happy Higgidy Christmas x
