Celebrating the Beauty of Veg: Our Packaging Designs

You may have noticed that we rather like brightly patterned packaging. But with this, comes a lot of time, effort, creativity and hidden meaning that you may or may not have already discovered.

Half of our Brand team consists of Hannah and Han (the dream team), who look after all things visual for our packaging. When a new recipe is being created, Hannah and Han will sit down together and try the recipe, picking out key ingredients, flavours and inspirations. From there Han works her magic, hand painting designs to encapsulate this.

What we especially love is creating our veggie-based designs; allowing for diversity and creative flair when it comes to painting something that’s going to stand out but that also captures the flavour of the recipe. Vegetables all have their own unique shapes and textures, which are really fun to play around with in the design process. As Han explains;

“I think there’s so much versatility when it comes to drawing or painting vegetables. I love a pop of colour and creating textures, so veg allows me to experiment with different techniques and materials to create the final piece”

One of our all-time favourites is the design for our Cauliflower Cheese and Broccoli Quiche. For this, Han’s took inspiration from the scatterings of bright white cauliflower florets found within the quiche, paired with the green undertones of the broccoli. After brainstorming and experimenting with ideas, Han’s final design was a beautiful fan effect of cauliflower on a brocoli-esque bed of green; really shouting about the glorious veggies within this quiche.

In fact, we loved the vibrancy of this pattern so much that we used it on the cover of Higgidy: The Veggie Cookbook! We feel that it really stands-out on the bookshelf and gives anyone picking it up a whole heap of veg-spiration, whilst being a little bit Higgidy. As proven here, our patterns aren’t just limited to our packs – they’re now dotted around Higgidy HQ, adding a splash of colour and a warm welcome to our visitors.

Another veg-based pattern we love is for our vegan Creamy Mushroom and Kale Pie. In our opinion, this pie is a perfect winter warmer for those grey days where something hearty and wholesome is very much needed. So, we created a pattern using the earthy tones of mushrooms, with a gentle rolling effect of the inside of lots of portobello mushrooms, to really highlight the warming and earthy mushroom(y) flavours within the recipe.

We also enjoy creating little illustrations, particularly of veg, to further emphasise the ingredients that feature in our recipes. Using patterns, illustrations and splashes of colour really allows us to celebrate the different shapes sizes of veg and the knowledge that no two vegetables are ever the same – a bit ‘Higgidy’ so to speak. So, as Han creates these, she always adds a classic Higgidy twist to reflect these beautiful imperfections, which is also why no two illustrations are the same
