With sideshows and stalls, hoopla, a hook the duck game, bubbles, a balloon man and an enormous red football, this year the higgidy picnic was bigger than ever. Over 150 higgidy cooks and their families boarded two big yellow busses and zipped out into the Sussex countryside for a day of fun, food and little ducks.
Uncharacteristically, there was hardly a pie in sight, Instead a huge barbecue supplied endless sausages, burgers and salad. A large table of puddings was soon demolished by the ravenous throng, as was a similar table laden with bottles of lovely beer and wine.
The big event of the day was the final of the table foosball championship. The table, looking somewhat incongruous in the middle of the field, for a few minutes became the centre of a crowd of noisy spectators. Both sides put in a good showing, but in the end, as expected, the victory went to Michal and Balazs, Balazs having grown up in a pub, and practiced every day of his life.
Tiny football finished it was time to bring out the giant football. As we organised ourselves into teams, Debbie wheeled out an enormous 8 foot rubber ball. Predictably it was carnage, with dozens of giggling bodies strewn up and down the field rolling around and holding their sides with laughter.
As the evening drew in, and we climbed aboard the busses back to the higgidy kitchen, we reflected on a glorious day well spent.
